As a part of R consortium fuzz testing proposal, we are creating a simple prototype on how to extract the valid inputs for a function from the RcppTestPackage and test it with Valgrind. We also test the test harness of the same rcpp method by passing DeepState’s randomized inputs and see if Valgrind can detect any errors for those inputs.

In the previous blog post we learned to extract the valid inputs for functions and test the functions with both valid inputs and DeepState generated random inputs and check for Valgrind errors. In this blog post, we will go one step further and try to find errors in the exported functions in the package.

Here we will perform all our tests and analysis on the Rcpp package BNSL. For example, consider the rcpp function – BNSL::mi we will test this function with both valid inputs and DeepState generated random inputs and check for Valgrind errors. First, check the man page of the function for its examples.

find the valid examples:

n=100

x=rbinom(n,1,0.5); y=rbinom(n,1,0.5); mi(x,y)

z=rbinom(n,1,0.1); y=(x+z)%%2

mi(x,y,proc=1); mi(x,y,2)

x=rnorm(n); y=rnorm(n); mi(x,y,proc=10)

x=rnorm(n); z=rnorm(n); y=0.9*x+sqrt(1-0.9^2)*z; mi(x,y,proc=10)

Run the valid inputs:

Now, let’s run the examples in R/mi.R

akolla@snaps-computer:~/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library/3.6/RcppDeepState/extdata/compileAttributes/BNSL$ R vanilla -e 'example("mi",package="BNSL")'

We find don’t any issues with running the examples on the mi function. Now let’s try using Valgrind with it and see if we find any issues with the function.

Run function under valgrind:

Running the code under Valgrind didn’t show any bugs or memory leaks. Let’s go one step ahead and try running the function under deepstate generated inputs.

As we know to run code under deepstate:

  • Create testharness for the function.
  • Compile the testharness
  • Run the testharness
  • Generate the crash files
  • Check the crash files for inputs that can break the code.

Now store the deepstate inputs that are obtained from the crash files into a list.

The complete log can be found here valgrind log mi

We see that 31504 errors are reported in the program from 311 contexts. Also, we can see issues like :

Conditional jump or move depends on the uninitialized value(s) Use of an uninitialized value of size 8

These happen when the process tries to access the memory locations that are outside of the available memory locations or the uninitialized locations. Here the size 8 means that the process was trying to read 8 bytes. It also gives information about memory addresses.

Here when we look at the code from where Valgrind found issues in src/mi_cmi.cpp. We can see the issue is with the table parameter and in the following line of code

IntegerVector c_x=table(x), c_y=table(y), c_xy=table(x+1000*y);

If we observe the IntegerVector c_xy, it is a combination of values from NumericVectors x and y. The vector c_xy is uninitialized when it uses values like NaN, NA from x,y. The creation of vector c_xy fails. Although the creation c_xy failed, we are trying to access it. Valgrind starts complaining about the issue by throwing an error message Conditional jump or move depends on the uninitialized value(s). In the documentation of mi, we see that x and y should be of equal length. An easy fix could be to check for the size of vectors x and y. Another option could be checking or restricting the acceptance of values like NaN, NA onto the vectors x,y, and also the proc value
