The quarterly Manchester R meeting took place last night.  It was our first experience of the striking new HOME venue just past Oxford Road station.  The Cornerhouse team have exchanged the bohemian charm of the old venue for the light and open design reminiscent of the Tate Modern.  The feedback on the venue was overwhelmingly positive.  The Event space provided panoramic views, a  terrace for breaks between talks and a well-stocked bar for refreshments!

Chris Campbell ran a workshop on function writing before the start of the main meeting. This introduced some of the fundamentals of writing good code: asking why you are coding, and how an analysis or utility will be consumed before even writing a single line of code.

Thanks to Robin Gower for his informative presentation on the split-apply-combine strategy focusing on the use of the R package plyr. Robin gave the context for the coding style suggested by the package, gave explanation of the behavior and syntax, and a motivating example.

Chris Campbell presented the background and aims of the newly formed R Consortium. This exciting new venture will support and strengthen the R Foundation, providing additional resource for developing infrastructure which will allow the R language to be strengthened and evolve.

Mango Solutions would like to extend a warm welcome particularly to the new members of the group which is a great mix of people representing the regions many commercial and academic institutions.

The next Manchester R meeting will take place on the 24th November and the agenda will be published as usual nearer the time. We have received a couple of ideas already for the next meeting’s talks and we look forward to hearing further offers and suggestions. The presentations from the MeetUp will be published as usual on rmanchester.org soon.

The next big R event happening is the EARL ( Effective Application of the R Language) Conference on September 14th-16th in London, with over 40 speakers and amazing venues at the Tower Hotel and Tower Bridge Walkways – it is an event not to be missed. See the full agenda here
